Called Paha Sapa in the Lakota language, the Black Hills of South Dakota represent the eastern-most occurrence of many western species of flora and fauna and the western-most occurrence of a similar number of eastern species.  In 1899 the U. S. government authorized the first timber sale on the country’s public land.  Since that time the Black Hills have become one of the most heavily and diversely used forests in the United States.
